Dr. David Chen, born in Qingdao and grew up in Beijing, received his BSc in Chemistry from Xiamen.  He received his Ph.D. from University of Alberta in June 1993, and went to the University of British Columbia as an Assistant Professor of Chemistry in July 1994, where he is currently a full professor
Dr Chen is also a voting member in the Department of Anesthesiology, Pharmacology and Therapeutics, Faculty of Medicine of UBC. He is the recipient of the 2002 Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) Award in Analytical Separation Methods, and the Charles McDowell Award for Excellence in Research in 2003, a gold medal given to the most outstanding young scientist at UBC.  For his contribution in analytical chemistry, Dr. Chen received the W. A. E. McBryde Medal from the Canadian Society for Chemistry in 2008.  Dr. Chen published more than a hundred research papers and holds three international patents
