There are relatively few examples of small molecule actuators or fluorescent optical switches that undergo efficient and reversible, optically-driven transitions between two distinct states, and most of these are unsuitable for studies in living systems. So, the well known BIPS photochrome was utilized in living cells and animals. The incorporation of specific groups onto the aromatic backbone of the actuator can be used to manipulate metal ion concentration, specific dipolar protein interactions. Other molecular embellishments to the BIPS backbone provide opportunities for high-resolution optical control and read-out of physical properties of polymeric mimetics of the extracellular matrix. |
